HISTORY
Co-Founding President: Tawana Gibbs
Co-Founder: Felicia Kidd
Co-Founder: Ashley Scott
Established: July 2001
The intention of the organization began with college roommates wanting to promote sisterhood throughout the campus of Savannah State University. The women were trying to figure out a way to eliminate barriers that constantly tear women apart. The ladies had the idea that if they could promote sisterhood, honesty, and reliability to females, then that alone would constitute in making a difference within themselves as well as others.
Their first unofficial meeting was held on July 24, 2001. The vision, mission statement, objectives, and concepts were developed in this meeting. September 4, 2001 the first formal meeting was held and by January 2002, there was an established foundation with twelve Chartered Members. A Confidentiality statement was signed by all members including the adviser and by fall of 2002, SSE became an influential and respected organization.
In 2008, Terika Slocumb (SSE President 2008-2010) helped the organization reach another milestone by having SSE Incorporated. October 29, 2010, the organization became a certified charitable-based non-profit.
In August 2009, the co-founding President along with selected Chartered members, and Honorary members created and established the National Executive Board (NEB). The NEB was created to assist with the maturity of the organization. Governing, providing structure, and expansion are some of the objective of the NEB.
In 2013 & 2014 (under the presidency of Shara Bennett) the organization was awarded the Clifford E. Hardwick III Student Organization of the Year Award which honors a student club or organization that has made an exceptional and distinctive impact on its members, the university, and the community on the campus of Savannah State University.
